UT System ranks 13th nationally for technology transfer by Milken Institute

AUSTIN—The University of Texas System was ranked No. 13 in the country for its success in adapting research into new technologies, products and companies, according to the Milken Institute’s ranking of the 2017 Best Universities for Technology Transfer.

The report classified the top 200 universities across the nation for producing proven results from concept to commercialization.

The UT System Office of Innovation and Strategic Investment’s central goal is to leverage expertise, knowledge and relationships that will improve the odds of moving university-based innovations from labs to the marketplace.

“This report emphasizes System’s achievements to invest in groundbreaking ideas that have the potential to change lives, and we connect those on the frontline of discovery with industry leaders that can help them scale their discovery for true impact,” said Julie Goonewardene, associate vice chancellor of innovation and strategic investment.

Each university was ranked based on four standard indicators of technology transfer success: patents issued, licenses issued, licensing income, and start-ups formed, relying on data collected by the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) via the AUTM's Annual Licensing Activity Survey.

The Milken Institute report also carries with it a clear policy recommendation: American research universities are among the nation's most powerful engines for domestic economic growth and funding to sustain their research brings strong returns in the form of new industries, businesses and jobs.
