The University of Texas System commemorates the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

We commemorate the life and contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who dedicated himself to the struggle for equality, justice, and opportunity for all Americans.

Dr. King’s words and deeds continue to inspire us, a half century after his death.  But equally important, his teachings provide a sobering reminder of the distance between the values we share as Americans and the day-to-day reality for too many of our neighbors.

The mission and goals of The University of Texas System embody key elements of Dr. King’s aspirations for all people, including the opportunity to pursue educational and economic success.  Through our great institutions of higher education, we help so many achieve their dreams.   But there is more work to be done to ensure that all Texans have access to a great education and the opportunities it makes possible, and we are committed to that important goal.

Let us take the occasion of Martin Luther King Jr. Day to rededicate ourselves to the American values for which Dr. King fought, and ultimately gave his life, and to the essential and unfinished work of providing opportunity, justice, and hope to every single American.
