I believe, as Martin Luther King Jr. did, that an educator should not only challenge students intellectually, but also model character traits to them, such as integrity, curiosity, persistence, and vulnerability.
I also believe that before I can teach students to write, they must first see that I am genuinely interested in reading what they write. In the kind of authentic learning environment which I strive to create in my classes, students discover and create boldly, becoming authorities on a subject that matters to them; meanwhile, I get to do what I most enjoy doing: learn.
