My teaching philosophy is indebted to John Dewey's attempt to link education to both personal growth and the practice of democracy as a way of life.
I find that students respond positively to the challenge of taking up philosophy as a discipline that can be used to improve our understandings, cultivate our characters, and reconstruct the world. When students experience education in the broader terms of self-development and community-building, they are empowered to succeed not just in courses or even careers but in the perennial quest for a life worth living.
