The difficulty and the moral necessity of this task make my continuing quest to be a stronger teacher every single semester both a pleasure and a privilege.
As a professor of American literature, I teach students to be more perceptive readers, more eloquent writers, and more reflective and engaged citizens of the university and their community, by engaging students from diverse educational backgrounds, facilitating active learning, and at once maintaining high standards and providing the tools to attain them. Successful teaching is never merely a matter of having the correct theory, however subtle; rather, teaching is an art that demands practice, patience, and a commitment to adapting to the needs of each class and indeed each student.
