My approach to teaching is fundamentally rooted in the belief that dance and performance teach us about history, culture and what it means to be human. In my courses, I not only demonstrate how dance and performance reflect social, cultural and political ideas, but also how dance actively contributes to the construction and transmission of those meanings. It is critical for students to learn about the social, political and historical contexts that contribute to the creation, reception and categorization of art. To this end, I emphasize connections between fields, foster an active classroom that engages students both intellectually and physically and help my students grow into articulate writers, artists, scholars and citizens.
