Grant C. Fowler, M.D.
Professor and Vice Chair
Department of Family and Community Medicine
McGovern Medical School
UT Health Science Center at Houston
Always expecting to be a rural family doctor, my first calling was not to teach medicine. However, one of my mentors, Harold Pruessner, MD, suggested I try it. He said, from what he had observed, I would be good; I laughed and said, no way. (I think he really just needed faculty!) But I tried it, and after one year, I was hooked! The breadth of family medicine is daunting, at first. But having a God-given ability to simplify things, it has changed my life to use that gift and watch learners grasp what they considered a very complicated issue or process for the first time. It has become a priceless part of my life.
Grant C. Fowler, MD is currently a tenured Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. He is also Assistant Chief of Family Medicine at Memorial Hermann Hospital Texas Medical Center.
Dr. Fowler is a National Merit Scholar graduate of Rice University with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Upon receiving his Medical Degree from the University of Texas (UT) Houston McGovern Medical School, he completed his residency at UT Houston Memorial Family Practice. He also has a Certificate of Management from the University of Houston at Clear Lake. After almost eight years as the Director of the UT Houston Family Practice Residency, Dr. Fowler assumed the duties of Vice Chair in 1998.
