One of the greatest joys I have is when I find a student (i.e. a resident or fellow) who truly craves knowledge and really wants to learn how to give our patients the best care. When we are in the operating room and the resident surgeon reaches a specific point in time where they really understand the technique and you as the teacher see that “aha” moment register across their face – that is what makes all of this worth it.
As a board-certified ophthalmologist, I specialize in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery and ophthalmic oncology. My teaching involves medical students, residents and fellows. I teach nationally at an annual review course and through on-line educational modules for maintenance of board certification. The 55 county referral network in South Texas is served by me as one of just a few oculoplastic surgeons in the area and the only fellowship-trained ocular oncologist treating eye cancer patients. My practice includes providing patients with advanced treatments such as brachytherapy and biopsies for gene analysis for intraocular tumors. Additionally, my specialization includes the treatment of severe facial injuries, lacrimal, eyelid and socket disorders in adults and children. As a part of a multispecialty team, I coordinate care with oncology, radiation oncology, neurosurgery, otolaryngology, dermatology and plastic surgery. My research focuses on educating physicians on normative data in the Hispanic patient population and teaching surgeons innovative surgical techniques.
