Professor

Department of Occupational Health Sciences

School of Community and Rural Health

UT Health Science Center at Tyler

I am passionate about teaching and feel that I have succeeded not only when my students excel, but when I learn from my students.

Dr. Larry Lowry holds a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from San Jose State University and a Doctorate in Comparative Biochemistry from the University of California at Davis. After spending three years in the U.S. Army conducting research in human nutrition, Dr. Lowry moved to Cincinnati, OH, where he served as a Commissioned Officer in the United States Public Health Service. He held various positions at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) focused on the assessment of human exposure to chemicals using biological monitoring (measure of internal dose). After retiring from the U.S. Public Health Service, he briefly served as a research scientist at Midwest Research Institute, Kansas City before joining the faculty at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler (now also known as UT Health Northeast) in 1996. He continues to teach in the joint UT Health Northeast-Stephen F. Austin State University graduate program in Environmental Science. He also teaches toxicology and environmental health in the new School of Community and Rural Health at UT Health Northeast.

Dr. Lowry has served on several national and international committees. He currently chairs the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists Biological Exposure Indices Committee, an international committee that develops guidelines for safe levels of exposure for adults in the working environment.
