Sonia Kania, Ph.D.

Dr. Sonia Kania (Ph.D. University of Wisconsin-Madison) is a professor of Spanish in the Department of Modern Languages at The University of Texas at Arlington. A specialist in the historical development of the language, she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Spanish language and linguistics, including Spanish for Heritage Speakers, Spanish in the United States, and the History of the Spanish Language. Her research focuses on the edition and analysis of non-literary colonial texts from Mexico and New Mexico. Her articles have appeared in peer-reviewed journals such as Bulletin of Hispanic Studies, Journal of the Southwest, Revista de Filología Española, and Romance Philology, as well as in The Routledge Handbook of Spanish Historical Linguistics (Routledge, 2024). Dr. Kania has published monographs in her field of expertise, has contributed to collaborative research endeavors, and co-directs the Colonial Texts corpus of the Digital Library of Old Spanish Texts (Hispanic Seminary of Medieval Studies, 2018-). She has worked with several cohorts of students on the publication of digital editions of colonial Spanish texts. Dr. Kania’s teaching is guided by the principles of student access and success. She was a Phi Kappa Phi Recognized Professor at UTA in 2013, and received the Outstanding Teaching Award for Tenured Faculty from the College of Liberal Arts at UTA in 2018, as well as the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching-Tenured in 2023. She is currently finishing work on a co-authored Open Educational Resource, Español práctico: introducción al estudio de la lengua española (Mavs Open Press, 2023).
