We can all stay healthier and prevent certain health problems by eating right, exercising, getting enough sleep, and staying away from things that can harm your health, such as tobacco. But, there is one other part of preventive care that should not be overlooked – getting routine health screenings and exams.

Going in to see your doctor for a health exam is one of the best ways to take care of your health. Even if you’re not having any health problems, you should have a yearly exam by your doctor. Your doctor will give you a physical exam, do screenings for things like blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and talk with you about your health concerns. Your doctor can also make sure you’re getting the shots you need to prevent illness.

Preventive care and screenings can often mean finding health problems early, when your chances for treatment and recovery are better. The UT SELECT Medical plan covers many preventive health care services with no out-of-pocket costs.

Preventive Care Benefits

When you visit a network provider, preventive care services available at no cost to you include:

  • Blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol tests;
  • Colorectal cancer screening;
  • Vaccines;
  • Screenings for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) along with prevention counseling for adults at higher risk;
  • Help to stop smoking, lose weight, fight depression, and reduce alcohol abuse; and
  • Well-baby and well-child visits, from birth to age 21.

Preventive Care Services for Women

UT SELECT also covers the full cost of these preventive services specifically for women when using a network provider:

  • Mammograms;
  • Well-woman visits;
  • Pap smears (cervical cancer screenings);
  • Testing for HPV, the virus that can cause cervical cancer;
  • FDA-approved birth control methods and counseling;
  • Care to support healthy pregnancies;
  • Gestational diabetes screening;
  • Breastfeeding support, supplies, and counseling;
  • Osteoporosis screenings; and
  • Interpersonal and domestic violence screenings and counseling.

This is not a complete list of preventive health care services that are covered by the UT SELECT Medical plan. Talk with your doctor if you have any health concerns, and ask him or her which tests are right for you.
