The University of Texas Education and Research Center at Laredo, commonly referred to as the UT Center at Laredo, is a multi-institution teaching center that supports University of Texas institutions in the delivery of academic, research, clinical and community engagement activities in Laredo and the surrounding South Texas region.
Vision
A distinguished multi-institution teaching center, the UT Center at Laredo will improve the region’s quality of life by creating a healthier Laredo and a stronger Texas.
Mission
The UT Center at Laredo hosts a premier community of faculty, researchers and clinicians from multiple UT academic and health institutions devoted to cultivating health care leaders and professionals and engaging in progressive research that improves and transforms the health and well-being of Laredo and the South Texas region.
History
The UT Center at Laredo opened in 1993 as the Mid Rio Grande Border Area Health Education Center. The name later changed to the UT Health San Antonio Laredo Regional Campus. For more than 20 years, the campus has educated occupational and respiratory therapists, nutritionists and dietitians, provided clinical rotations for dental students and has been a key space for research. A major transformation occurred in 2021 when Sen. Judith Zaffirini authored and passed legislation transferring campus management to the UT System to expand research and education opportunities, including collaborations with multiple UT academic and health institutions.
