Expanding Capacity to Support Student Success in Mathematics and English
Launched in late 2023, the Developmental Education and Corequisite Capacity Building (DECCB) initiative is a two-year UT System effort designed to enhance co-requisite implementation across campuses through shared learning, collaboration, and access to subject matter experts.
The initiative aims to strengthen institutional capacity to address the ongoing challenges of learning loss, which have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. By crafting tailored solutions that better support students with identified academic needs in mathematics and English, the DECCB seeks to ensure more students build a strong academic foundation early in their college experience and persist toward degree completion.
Guided by Institutional Leaders
The DECCB is informed by a steering committee of institutional leaders, which meets quarterly to guide the initiative. A key focus of the committee offering input on the design of a system-wide landscape scan of corequisite practices, helping to shape recommendations and improvements in developmental education across UT System institutions.
Communities of Practice (CoPs)
At the heart of the DECCB initiative are two communities of practice (CoPs)—one dedicated to mathematics and the other to English. These CoPs meet monthly in virtual sessions and serve as spaces for faculty and institutional leaders to collaborate, share best practices, and explore evidence-based strategies to improve student outcomes in corequisite courses.
Through these communities, participants will:
- Engage with critical research and subject matter experts on effective corequisite strategies.
- Share insights and tailor solutions to their institutional needs.
- Review and respond to the landscape scan, informing UT System’s understanding of corequisite implementation challenges and opportunities.
A System-Wide Commitment to Student Success
By fostering collaboration and leveraging research-backed approaches, the DECCB initiative is a key part of UT System’s broader commitment to improving student success. This work ensures that students receive the support they need to thrive academically, setting them on a path toward achieving their educational goals.
