The Health Law section of The Office of General Counsel:
- provides legal advice and counsel to the UT System health institutions regarding operational, regulatory, and transactional matters
- administers The University of Texas System Professional Medical Liability Benefit Plan by:
- performing legal review and investigation of medical liability claims
- negotiating settlements
- coordinating potential state liability with the Office of the Attorney General
- providing defense of lawsuits
- managing outside defense counsel
- guidelines for defense counsel (UT Authentication required)
- facilitates the Plan's mandatory Risk Management Education, aimed at reducing the risk of involvement in incidents and allegations of medical negligence:
- via online course, available to all UT physicians covered by the Plan;
- by providing credentialing documents upon completion
